Hey Ronald,

You have just touched upon the importance of decompression gas when
doing decompression diving. The way to ensure you don't run into
problems like the one you mention is to not lose your deco gas. When I
do dives like the one you mention I either keep my deco gas one my
person, or it is tied off on the wreck right next to my primary tie
off. In this way you always ensure that you can return to you deco gas.

Each deco gas is calculated using the rule of thirds just like your
back gas. In this way you have enough extra deco gas for your buddy,
or for contingency plans in case you over stay your plan because you
got stuck, lost the line whatever.

So... Make sure you don't lose you deco gas. Don't tie it off on the
anchor line, don't hang it under the boat. Keep it on your person if
possible. If not, tie it off at the point of entry or just inside the
wreck. This way you avoid having to do goofy calculations for the
"new" rule of fifths.

Mat.

My original query which began this thread stemmed from my thinking about
the following scenario: Each of a pair of air divers descends with two
deco mixes, and removes both deco bottles and leaves them on a wreck at
the point the buoy line ties into the wreck. The pair penetrates the
wreck via an access point nearby. At the turn-around point deep inside
the wreck, one buddy loses *all* of his/her backgas. Upon exiting the
wreck, the now air-sharing buddies cannot locate their four deco bottles
(or the buoy line). The buddies must now make a free ascent, blow a
bag,
and deco on one diver's remaining air.
