Subject: Those who are condemned to remember must forget
"Long before april, I and the members of my crew will be in perfect
physical shape. We will be on a diet more rigid than any stout woman would
endure forthe sake of her figure. There will not be an once of fat on any
of us. We will have given up alcohol, tobacco and mixed foods. By this I
mean that will will eat only one class of foods at each meal - either
carbohydrates, proteins, facts, or sugars, but never two at a time. We will
drink only rain water from carefully sealed crocks.
For breakfast we will have only a glass of orange juice, and when we dive,
a pound of honey in the comb. the honey we will chew thoroughly, spitting
out the comb. This, in preparation for our diving, will act as a buffer, a
background for the oxygen to burn upon, so that it will not use up our
tissues. As we work at great depths in an artificial atmosphere, oxygen
will burn our blood clean, and the slightest impurity or unbalance,
traveling through our system with great rapidity, will cause disagreeable
reactions. Our bodies must be perfect metabolic machines.
When we come up from a dive, we will be given only a half a tumbler or
strained honey, lemon juice, and rain water (the rain water carries a high
% of oxygen, and is very pure).

John D. Craig, DANGER IS MY BUSINESS, 1938, writing of a proposed Lusitania
expedition.
