Nobody should plan gas for a dive that is other than for the deepest depth than can be hit on that dive. OR EVEN PLAN YOU MIGHT GO A LITTLE DEEPER. Why is everyone pushing their PO2's ?? Capt. Jim, this is a recipe for disaster, no matter "disciplined " you are. You are on top of the wreck and with EAN 30 on you back you are pushing 1.48. Basically if you end up deeper for ANY reason, either unintentionally or as a result of an emergency or some sort of gear failure, you're in trouble. And this can happen to anyone, even "disciplined " divers. Who is recommending this gas ?? If this is a recreational dive, then you are over the 1.4 recommended max PO2, if this is a technical dive, then you aren't planning for contingencies, one of the CORNERSTONES of technical diving. Unless its something unusual like a wreck on a ledge or reef on a wall, plan for the sand, then add ten feet. Mix you best mix, setting your PO2 for the deepest you might get, then add a in a contingency that that depth may be exceeded by ten feet ( unusual high tide, recent storm moving sand or wreck itself ). Hot nitrox can be just as deadly as deep air, and for technical diving, why do you want to gobble up all your OTU's while compressing, when you need to leave sufficient dosage to uncompress ? Everyone is watching the CNS limit, what about the whole body dose ?? When I teach recreational gas, the students get the best mix for ten feet under the sand at a specific dive site, on which the wreck or reef sits that we are going to explore while learning about nitrox. I would be criminally negligent to blend them and issue them a cylinder with a gas too hot for them to hit the bottom with. Hot Nitrox to explore the top of a deep wreck is a recipe for disaster.
