To have a pair of nicely back-hugging doubles with exactly the same
configuration as your larger doubles (and they are readily available here -
no isolator though). 

I'd take my 2x7 over 1x10 or 1x12 any day (well, maybe in a pool I'd go for
a 1x7 or 1x4 ;-)

But your point about the total gas volume in small doubles and the type of
diving is a good one.
