"Under a 5 atmospehre pressure, the diver gets as much oxygen per breath as if he was breathing under an oxygen tent inhaling only pure oxygen....... The result is much the same as can be seen when an object is burned in pure oxygen rather than in ordinary air. Combustion is far more rapid, the flame is far more brilliant, and the heat developed is far more intense. Effectively then a diver under heavy pressure is acted on similarly to an object being burned in pure oxygen. The combustion of the tissues is accelerated, the fat is the body is literally burned out of him after a few deep dives, and generally, thus simulated, he is able to perform feats of muscular strength under pressure on the bottom that would be beyond him on the surface. This is sometimes unfortunate, when the diver is tempted to try some superhuman tasks, for it gives his body an overstrain which he normally would never subject it to." Commander Edward Ellsburg.
