Subject: Responce to Call to Arms
Dear everyone on the list:

Just got back from three days of doing the type of diving we all love. It
was a needed vacation from my hectic life. Yes, lots of brass to clean. More
anchors to add to the pile ( current count is 83. )

I returned to 193 e-mails. Although I do not wish to sound like a
brown-noser, there are some of you out there that I really admire and
respect and learn from, and carefully read you e-mails, twice, then saved.
Your coaching and advice is greatly appreciated.

Most others I read once, then sighed, and deleted.

The purpose of this post is to tell you about the four e-mails I received
privately that I read over and over, then printed out and read them again,
then cried for a while.

These four e-mails that I will save forever were from immediate relatives of
some of those that died on technical training dives over the last year. They
requested I do not identify them or make the names of those loved ones they
lost public. I will abide by their wishes. I do not wish to open old wounds
but rather avoid future wounds. They are lurking on this list and getting
the e-mails via fictitious addresses so that they are not contacted. They
are lurking, and reading, and trying to understand how they lost a love one
while under the supervision of a "professional". They are trying to come to
grips with the fact that there is a spare bedroom in their house, un-used,
cold, dark, with a few photos on the wall of smiling faces of the one they
lost out on a boat, diving with friends. They are desperatley trying to
educate themselves so that they can cope with the lose. They are formulating
what there game plans should be, and how they can stop the madness and
stupid loss of life. They are reading what we have to say, and responded to
my "Call to Arms" post.

Here is an excerp from one e-mail. I hope we can all learn and think and
grow and mature, and eventually de-stroke this lifestyle we love.

I am sending this to thank you for your comments posted to 'techdiver'. I am
not a diver,

But have learned much about it in the past 11 months.

My youngest brother
was one of
Those victims that fell prey to strokedom (agency,instructor,etc.).

Your comments are greatly appreciated. And comments that all should take
more seriously.

Every time I see something posted on a death it reaffirms the great need for
thoughts like you
Put forth.

Again thanks , it is refreshing to see intelligence about a huge
problem.

So folks, I am gonna start a website and a database. www.techinfo. com or
somethingh along those lines. I will keep it clean and professional, and do
my damn best to avoid and elimnate biases and conflicts. I am gonna make it
a raw depository of honest information. Give me a month or two, then I will
be asking you all for submissions. There will be a page for recommended and
not-remmended instructors and agencies and dive boats and dive shops and
manufacturers. There will be an incidents page. There will be a page for the
Holgarthian and DIR platform. There will be a "links" page to some of the
great websites I keep bookmarked. The primary purpose of this website will
be to advise divers interested in technical training to educate themselves
as to the quality and backgrounf of those they intend to receivce traing from.

Any other suggestions ? Good, send 'em to me. Heck, the way I figure it I'm
gonna host the site, and just pack it with YOUR wisdom and YOUR expertise. (
And ya, I know who is blowing blue smoke out their asses on this list. )

But I am gonna do it. I just have to figure out a way not to get sued.

Over and out.

Kevin
