I know I shouldn't say that to anyone on this flame list, but I do. The problem is, unless you are in an area of a high concentration of advanced divers, you can't readily get good info on who's good and who's not. Its hard to educate yourself as to who is good and who is bad. Bad technical instructors will kill you as sure as putting a cheap 9mm to your head and pulling the trigger. And the one that was highly recommeded to me turned out to be a stroke. So there goes the whole theory of research and educatting yourself. Even in Los Angeles, I tried to find the best tech instructor, and on one dive in particular ( I was the student ), I wondered if I was gonna have to rescue him. He had his brand new full face mask all fogged up and leaking. Brand new block manifold system all screwed up. Hoses and computers tangled. I mean it was really bad. And the whole time I thought to myself, jeeeez, I'm paying for this ?? On another dive we mis-communicated and got seprated because I thought he said " go over there and wait for me ". ( I am being very generous about accepting 50% of the blame for the miscommunication by the way ) So I swam about twenty yards away and hung out and waited, and waited, and waited and watched my computers and gas supply and he decided to NOT TO JOIN ME SO eventually I decided to abort my dive ( 195 FSW for 26 min ). I found my way back to the anchor, but the anchor was pretty damn crowded so I broke out my primary reel and primary lift bag and decided to deco JUST BEHIND the boat. Open ocean, current like a river, but I though COOL ! - AUTO SELF TECHNICAL TRAINING. I'll just train and supervise myself, and in the fucking future write the checks for the instruction to myself. In other words, the instroketer had no idea where I was, and since I could see all the divers deco-ing on the chain and around me, he was no where to be found. We eventually met back on the boat, he was strangly calm as I filled him in on the second half of my training dive that he was not present for, got dopplered, zero bubbles, and I called it a day. I figured I was gonna get chewed out and blamed for the separation, but not a word ! We won't even talk about us blending gas together, it was a learning experience. Like I sez, bad technical instructors will kill you as sure as putting a cheap 9mm to your head and pulling the trigger. Kevin " You'll never miss the water, until the well runs dry . . ..
