I have personally been involved in body recoveries for 4 technical divers in the last 8 months. In each case, the deaths occurred largely due to misdirection which has allowed these people to believe that their own gear configurations and proceedures were fine. The bondage wings, the 4 steel 98's with wetsuits, the lack of real Buddy team training, this and much more are all major violations of common sense, things we have been addressing for ages now. Wrolf is blocking this message with his misdirections---maybe not to you, but certainly, he is going to be responsible for temporarily slowing DIR acceptance by several new tech divers---since they are already tech diving, and since tech divers are dying right now, every month, I'd say this is an important, life threatening issue. Wrolf has no knowledge base or experience in tech diving that justifies his participating in a discussion in which the outcome may influence whether people will live or die. Just because you realize this, is in no way an indication it is obvious to all others. I had a reporter from the NY Daily News call me on the phone yesterday, about a story he is doing on the Andria Doria. To him---and by extension, the public at large, Wrolf has a voice equal to George, to you, to me, to Zero, or to Bill Mee, basically, to the reporter, there is no discrimination as to what opinions are "better". The public will hear both sides of any arguement, and think each side must be valid. Insurers may just come to believe diving deep is dangerous, and not grasp that safer deep diving exists---but that it is done differently. They will see only a huge rising death toll, and no agreement by any of us on why the deaths are increasing. I know for a fact insurance underwriters ARE reading tech diver posts---I have this from absolutely reliable inside the industry information. While this is bad, the chance of a new tech diver dying two weeks from now, because he wore a heavy wet suit and bondage wings , is still a real threat----one that posts by Wrolf will contribute to---and this is much worse still. > > Net discussions are largely self correcting, as the dumb > stuff gets rightly > stomped on, right in the open where everyone can see it > happen - and that > free discussion is more condusive to safety in the long run > than trying to > control what is posted so only the currently dominant view is > represented. > > So why don't you drop this nonsense, and get back to talking > about diving. > God knows, bdi's and Wrolfs exhange has been bad enough. > You place an unfairly large burden on DIR proponents, if you suggest to every potential "Wrolf" out there with less than 10 open water dives in their life, that they "ought" to argue with any concept they wish. I can't tell you how tired I am of responding to the same questions, again and again. I don't mind when they are "asked", but the arguementative quality Wrolf charicturizes is what really turns this issue of "Misdirection" and wasted time into a new issue----should George, Bill, Carmichael, or any of the other WKPP divers even continue with attempts toward safety on the list --- or should we just turn it over to Wrolf and those like him....When we meet people on boats, we can still talk to them about DIR, and perhaps George or Bill can write some magazine articles---maybe that's all we should do. Maybe we should let the free speech proponents convince each other of whatever they want. Before Wrolf, this was NEVER as large an issue as it is now. But he has become the exageration that makes our safety message harder and harder to bring to each new tech diver. I have not made nasty slams at many list members.... and I have made no "religious" categorizations up until this Wrolf Courtney example. If his nonsense was to stop, you'd hear no more "religious" type dialog by me. I see him as a drug dealer entering a "decent" neighbor hood. Before him, it was not perfect, but it was OK for all of us....Now, I have to decide if I want to keep trying to get rid of him, or to just move out.
