You have a restriction in a cave. And there is a team
 of four divers.

The divers have varying swim paces.

It takes diver one 5 min to swim the restriction
It takes diver two 10 min to swim the restriction
It takes diver three 1 min to swim the restriction
It takes diver four 2 min to swim the restriction.

However only two divers can go through the restriction
at a time and all lights have failed except one.
Additionally they only have 17 minutes of air to get all
 divers through the restriction.

The one light MUST be used to navigate the restriction
so when a dive team (of two) swims through one of the
divers must bring the light back. The time of the slowest
diver is added for each traverse of the restriction.

Solve it so all divers get through in the 17 minute window!

One answer :

Diver 3 and Diver 4, Diver 3 goes back
Diver 1 and Diver 2, Diver 4 goes back
Finally, Diver 3 and Diver 4 swim through.

I know this is supposed to be a fun problem but . . . whatever you do DON'T
RELAY !

All divers go through at the same time as two teams of two, each pair
maintaining touch contact.
10 & 5 min divers together in the lead.
1 & 2 min divers in the back with the light. (3rd man in line has the light)
Light shined along floor or line to reach ahead of first team as much as
possible.

This allows the light and total team gas resources to be accessible to both
teams in the event of a problem in the restriction.

A problem while seperated from the light man would be far more serious than a
team working with limited light.

Though the quality of lighting is diminished, it reduces the time during which
the light must continue to work in order to get out.

If there is a problem after two divers emerge from the restriction while two
other are still behind it does the diver with the problem get left in the dark
while the light man goes back?

If the final light goes out with two divers left behind the restriction how
long should they wait for the light man to return before setting off in the
dark ?

Any diver can suddenly be left with much less gas at any moment !

Can you imagine waiting behind this restriction in the dark for the light man
to return?
