Thanks for all the input guys - lots of good info.    I did not realize there
were so many of these canyons up and down the coast.   

My mom is giving my wife and I a couple of open destination plane tickets that
will probably only be good in the continental USA and I thought California
would be a good option.    I love the kelp beds but I never got to do any
offshore or deep diving while over there in the Navy maaaany years ago.   It
would be nice to get away from all this clear warm Florida water for a change.

Got to juggle the schedules and vacations now and see if I can make it over
there before it gets too cold for a wet suit.
