Dean, The first time I heard about the great whites was after a 1.5 hour deco in blue water about two years ago at La Jolla(Scripps Canyon). One of my buddies thought I had bumped him during his deco. I had not been anywhere near him since I was unable to find the anchor line and did a lift bag deco hang. Hopefully it was a sea lion. I asked a marine bio. buddy of mine, Wayne Brown, about sharks in the area and he was the one who told me about the great white mamas giving birth there. I have seen lots of blues, leopards and sand sharks in the area but never a great white. Marine life is abundant in the area. Sometimes we will see feeding frenzies of sea lions, dolphins, seagulls and the occasional orca going at it. The only thing I worry about is the big ass squid that hang out at the bottom of the canyon. I can't imagine the fun of having a 3' or 4' squid latching on to you at 300'. I have never seen a documentary on the area, but would appreciate it if anybody knows of one. I believe the squid mate in February. This would probably be prime shark time since every ocean critter chows down on the squid smorgasborg. Have fun in South Africa. My same marine bio. buddy did a dive trip there and said there were plenty of large man eating critters there.
