You can park and swim out to the canyon at La Jolla Shores, but the
bottom is mostly sand and the drop is fairly slow. It is better to take
a boat one mile up the shore to Scripps Canyon. You can launch an
inflatable at the shores or go six miles south to Mission Bay and launch
out of there. I have a 20' Zodiac and typically will launch from a
ramp. From the shores go north to the pier and go about another 200
yards north. If you line up with the big house on the sand and the end
of the pier you are over one of the better walls. If you don't have a
depth finder just drop your anchor to 150' go north and you will catch
the wall at 120'. I have heard about people paddling from the beach
there, but I don't recommend it. Blacks beach usually has really strong
surf. Water temps have been as low as 48 degrees at depth. Dry suit is
highly recommended.
Dive safe,
