Technical divers will probably not find much deep water within beach diving range in the Monterey area, with the possible exception of the north end of Monastery beach, which is close to a part of Monterey Canyon. I have never dived that spot myself, but I'm told there is a very dramatic dropoff that goes as deep as you care to go. This is not to say, however, that there isn't plenty of perfectly splendid diving to be had in the Monterey area. Except for diving within the Point Lobos marine preserve, no reservations are needed. For that matter, even at Pt. Lobos you can usually get in during the week this time of year without a reservation. I will be glad to give free advice about where to dive here, but remember, you get what you pay for :-) Tim
