Subject: Wetsuit+single steel tank, fresh water diving / DIR
Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 11:00:56 +0200
I am going to buy a BC and a Tank for fresh water diving in Belium. For the
BC I will probably buy a Halcyon backplate / wing combination (since I do
intend on diving doubles within the foreseable future).

When looking for tanks, I found that the standard tank used here is around
15 liters Steel (ca. 95 Cuft). I checked with some dive shops and it seems
that they do not sell Al tanks in Belgium. However because of the comments
on this list regarding steel tanks and wetsuits I was wondering whether a
single steel tank with backplate, wing and wetsuit would be safe to dive in
fresh water conditions.

I believe the argument for Al tanks is the possibility of ditching the
weight belt to become positive (not so good when you have a deco obligation
I guess). Problem there is also that the DIR proponents put the weights on
the tank (as far as I understood) which does not make them very ditchable.
Personally I would prefer mounting the weights on the tank, because in my
opinion the chance of losing a weightbelt are much higher than the chance of
a BC failure.
Would it not make sense to mount a second wing to the backplate for
redundancy when using a wetsuit (without the inflator connected, as
described on GUE.com)? Or alternatively take a liftbag, such as the Halcyon
surf mat?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
