Avoid the SpD at all costs. Having just given one away to a friend, I can tell you it is an enormous waste of money. Although the design is great compared to lugging a UK800, it is a piece of junk compared to an AUL style light. The SpD has a twist on switch which is awkward to use and gets worse with age, there is no Goodman handle, and the cord is about 3ft longer than needed. The cord has non-standard connections that bend far to easily and can't be found at Home Depot. The batteries cost six times as much a AUL style, can't be found easily, and can't be replaced easily. The charger costs about six times as much and can't be found at Home Depot like a standard 12V charger. The inside of the reflector is finished with a foil coating instead of metal. For the same price, you could have an AUL 16, or better yet a 100 and have four times the burn time as an Spd. Or you could run a 100watt bulb and have the same burn time with WAY more light. If you feel the 14/16/100s are too big, get a Meteor 5. It will be cheaper, smaller, better and more servicable. And the SpD head doesn't weigh less than an AUL. >I would recommend the 50-watt Ikelite SpD-AA for wreck diving. The >NiCad battery pack is smaller and less bulky than cave diving canister >lights, with the tradeoff being burn time. While the 1-hour burn time >is inadequate for the needs of many cave divers, it is just fine for >most wreck diving. It recharges quickly back on the boat. The head >also weighs much less than other lights. ______________________________ E.J.
