I would like to point out that a major advantage of the DIR system is it's standards. If you dive with a fellow DIR diver you know that the long hose is on the right post. When the shit hits the fan you can react instinctively without having to mull through "uh, lets see, old John here puts his long on his left which means that his second is on his right, or did he leave it on his left?...". Although many of you revolt against standards, citing "personal preference", thats fine and all but in the process you are casually tossing out the concept of automatically knowing exactly where everything is on your buddy. I understand that techdivers are a pretty iconoclastic bunch, but in the interests of survival equipment standards are a reasonable goal, IMHO. Comparing this goal to all sorts of extremist political ideologies is laughable at best. Boys and girls, it is *our* butts that are on the line here. Either you are DIR or you are not. Nowadays most are not which is why I prefer to dive solo. I look forward to the day when DIR is taken up by most divers, and at that point I will reconsider the buddy system. But right now it is a total joke with every diver a personal preference puzzle which you only have seconds to figure out when hell breaks loose. Why DIR and not some other system? There *is no other system* you bunch of bone heads.
