In a message dated 98-07-16 10:58:38 EDT, you write: <<Dan, << Can you expound on the method used to "set up your bungee cords" ? << Did you place it tighter below and looser on top? << Did you measure length or strech to set them up? do you have any figures if you <<did? First on setup, I fully inflated the bladder and checked the overpressure valve. Then I backed it off some and left it inflated. I then took the silicone cords and pre-stretched them all to the same lengths. When I first took the cords out, they were stiff and I stretched them about a foot, foot and a half to soften them up and so they would be long enough to fit around the inflated bladder. I didn't measure as I stretched them so I'm estimating about a foot and a half max. They all ended up at about the same length give or take a 1/32 of an inch. When I installed them, I tied them off (square knots) a little tighter at the bottom than at the top.(left slightly longer tails on the bottom cords) Once I got them tied off, I made sure that I could still orally inflate all the way. <<Have you experienced any buoyancy/ inflation problems? Absolutely no problems with bouyancy or inflation. I haven't had the inflater stick, the bladder hasn't failed to inflate, it hasn't popped the overpressure valve, I got lucky first time around and was satisfied with my trim so I didn't have to retie the bands. I've also had no problems with band stiffness in cold water but I do have to admit that they have only been in cold water a couple of times so it's too early to tell if long term will affect them. I can only go based on other OMS wings that have had many ice dives with no stiffness. Probably due to the compound the bands are made of? <<Can you fully inflate the wing orally? Yes I can fully inflate it orally. In fact, that's a routine check for me when I first pull the wings out of my gear bag and when I clean them up after diving. <<Again Dan I dont want to bash, I just want to know exactly what you guys are <<doing, so we all can know what to do, and what to advise other OMS wing owners <<not to do. << Al Marvelli aka KybrSose@ao*.co* I understand that you personally are not trying to bash. Neither am I. The OMS work for me as they do for many others. If down the road I find something that I can see works better, I'll use it. What I do like is that when I dive a single cylinder, the wings don't fold out around it. That way I run less of a risk of accidental puncture. And as I put in my last post, the wings are easier on my neck. A lot less strain. And, my cylinders stay in place without dropping down my back or riding up in the water like with the old BC. To those that don't like the "bondage wings" hey if the wings you have work for you, then more power to you. It's what you like, what you are comfortable with and what works for you. I personally don't care if someone uses OMS wings or some other brand. If it works for them that's all that matters. It is odd tho that OMS gets bashed a lot here but no other brand of wing does. And it seems that the biggest bone of contention about them is the "bondage". Well if that is true, all one needs to do is not put the silicone cords on the wing. Outside of the cords, is there really any other major difference between the wings? Hope that went a ways to answering your questions.
