Dear Steve and all Tech Divers, As one of the guys that that actively opened the "Pandora's Box" of mixed gas diving to the "Recreational Community" I , after a long silence, have something to say: 1- The final cause of death on Harvey is not in yet- until that occurs, or even actually means anything to a primarily laymen medical diving group is something else. In the meantime, we are all doing a real disservice to our industry and our avocation through conjecture and self-serving, targeted comments. Stop it, for in the end, we are all in this together. Grow up. 2- The movement of the sport diving community into "commercial mixed gas techniques" (Initially, and primarily for profit, to date) could have great promise by virtue of the self-contained nature of this extension of the well established technology. But, the majority of you continue to miss the point. You guys did not invent mixed gas diving, you have only been "loaned" this trust, a stewardship, a gift, from all those before you, and you are now expected to take it this old technology to a new self-contained level SAFELY. Frankly, {and with some real exceptions}, you guys are blowing it, by in-fighting, misplaced egos, too much profit incentive, all without the willingness to create a meaningful International training standard not based in profit, but truly to promote safer Tech diving. 3- If the "Technical Diving" community, were any larger today, you would be enjoying the same standards we in commercial diving, NOAA, and NASA, have had since our Mixed Gas beginnings and long before you. Almost without exception, the available "Certified & Sanctioned" Nitrix, let alone the Tri-Mix gas diving programs now available to those with enough money are a true, and potentially fatal joke. Get your act together now, or be ready for the Feds to regulate you because you have placed greed above History. 4- Deep Air Diving is a killer. In my experience, as one of the most experienced DCI treatment supervisors to date, there is simply no single greater denominator for diving morbidity or mortality (permanent injury and death). Those of you that actually survive a deep air dive (200FSW + Deep Air Survivor) apparently have never had to experience the high CO2 levels caused by survival exercise and the extreme nitrogen narcoses it produces. If you don't believe me, next time you go diving down south and can see a buddy 50 yards away, swim as hard as you can to them. Hold on tight, and see how disorientated you get as the the CO2 reaches your brain. If you are alone, up on a NE deep wreck and must perform survival exersize, you are dead. Those before you have proved it. Deep Air is Macho Bull Shit. If you need to go deep- Learn Tri-Mix Diving from one of the few Professional's out there. Don't bother to E-mail me unless you have a solution. Better, and safer diving to you all, Glenn Butler Life Support Technologies Wahoo2001@ao*.co* wrote: > death is stupid, but we all will get there. How do know harvey didnt die of a > heart attack.
