Bill Mayne stated that the causes of osteonecrosis are not well understood, but that oxygen exposure is suspected. Note that if oxygen exposure is the disease mechanism in osteonecrosis, then one would expect to see an increased incidence in nitrox and trimix divers, since they tend to go with the highest PO2 tolerable on dives. I expect it will be several years before any statistically significant results are available on the sport diver community, although it might be interesting to do a study of NOAA nitrox divers. I still feel better from diving/decompressing on EAN or O2, and I am more scared of neurological damage from type II DCS than I am of osteonecrosis, so I guess I will continue to use EAN and O2.
