the on deck abrasion and bumps. Would a
mini hp gauge (that screws directly into a
hp port on a reg) be warranted for this usage?
In particular are they reliable.
Are they likely to get bumped, crushed, spindled or
mutilated? Certainly the issue of being unable to read
them is moot on the boat. Please note the hanging gas
is backup or safety deco gas.
I believe contingencies are good. Yes I carry deco gas with me.

I've been using them on deco bottles for about a year, on a
total of probably 100 or so dives. They *are* hard to read, but do you
really need to know whether you have 2000 or 2050 PSI?

I've found them to be extremely reliable. I even once
had an AL80 rigged with one fall three feet to the deck,
landing directly on the guage, which took the weight
of the fall. The guage was dented a bit, but still
operates flawlessly.

So I think they're the absolute balls. The only thing
you have to be careful about is to make sure that
your bottles are rigged so that the angle of the
guage is directly readable while diving, as once
you get diffraction angles involved, the read angle
is pretty narrow.

-Will
