The long hose exist for situations where you might have to exit a passageway single-file. In this case, the standard 39" octopus doesn't cut it. Having a long octopus also makes life easier if you have to decompress using it. The long hose does increase breathing resistance somewhat, but that is offset by the additional safety afforded by it's presence.
