The Trimix gods have once again deemed us lucky enuf to hear their thoughts. " skills and techniques need to be honed to perfection, but also performed with due regard to the safety of the diver. Shallow water practice may not provide the adrenaline rush (Narcosis BUzz for the dirty Bird) that can be experienced at the deeper depths, but then again, it also prevents instructor heart attacks when things dont go as planned. Keep in perspective that although you, the instructor, may be bored by the seemingly repetitive nature of these skills, in many cases the student is fully task loaded and really doesnt require further "stimulation" to make it any more interesting for him/her! " Wow TRagic Death Incorporated has a good idea hear do training in shallow water first gee that make so much freakin sense. "Intermediate Trimix certification, primarily targeted for those divers that wanted to dive mid-range depths, but for whatever reason were uncomfortable diving Air as the primary gas at these depths. ( they can read a freaking ppo2 chart and see the brain damage that come sfrom diving deep on air?) Many technical divers fail to recognize that there are individuals that are susceptible to Nitrogen Narcosis or simply do not like the feeling it gives them, regardless of the mental impairment. When all was said and done however, the practicality as well as the Insurance showed that Trimix instructors have all the tools available to you without the necessity of generating another level of certification. As a Trimix Instructor, you train a student and at the completion of the course, certify the diver to the depth level you are confident that they can perform. For example, if you are training a trimix diver, you would observe the skills and performance, ensure dive planning all looks good, that the comfort in the water is apparent, then the diver would be certified as a Trimix diver to the range of the Standards, 330 fsw/100 meters. For those divers that are not interested in the depths below about 200 fsw/60 meters, the instroketor can train them in the mid-range depths (130 fsw/40 meters to 200fsw/60 meters) and at the end of the course apply the depth limitation appropriate for that diver. The same amount of classroom is required in either case, there is no watering down of a trimix course just because they arent going to depths below 200 fsw/60 meters. This begs the question however, how do they qualify for the prerequisite Extended Range diver, which technically requires 2 dives deeper than 165 fsw/50 meters. The prerequisites for the Trimix Diver course still require 150 dives or equivalent at the discretion of the instructor. The Extended Range diver course requires 100 dives or equivalent at the discretion of the instructor. The Trimix Instructor would perform additional initial dives in the 100 fsw/30 meter to 130 fsw/40 meter range to verify the candidates understanding of the effects of pressure on such things as buoyancy reaction time and cylinder duration. The Trimix Instructor would also ensure that the equipment configuration comfort was firmly established. In other words, when the Trimix Instructor has verified that the diver is competent at the 100 fsw/30 meter to 130 fsw/40 meter range, has adequate numbers of dives and is fully aware of the effects of pressure, they may enroll the candidate in a Trimix diver course without the Extended Range prerequisite. The student can then be trained in the mid ranges of 130 fsw/40 meters to 200 fsw/60 meters utilizing Trimix as the primary breathing gas. At the successful completion of the course, make a notation as to the depth limitation, typically 200 fsw/60 meters in this case, and send to TDI HQ as you normally would. . Joe Odom International Training Director Wow what can you say when joe odom talks instead of the slob they actually sound ike they give a rats ass about teaching safely. ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1 -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
