Ooh, ooh....South Florida wreck diving....something I know a little bit about! Okay, here's my two-bit's worth on lift bags: The standard issue for the group I dive with is one OMS Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) and one 100# Carter Lift Bag (altho some are replacing the Carter bag with a SubSalve type bag simply because it packs away a bit smaller.) The 100# bag is primarily used for sending up permanently attached lines from the wrecks (Key West dive shops won't get together and buoy the wrecks we dive, so we're still bounce diving to put up mooring lines.) A 50# bag works okay, unless there's a current. Then there are many times when it just won't make it to the surface, so we use 100#. If a 100# bag won't clear the surface with a mooring line attached, it usually means too much current for a moored dive, and we go drift instead. The SMB is used in the case you described (either an emergency, or free floating deco.) The closed bottom, and relatively low volume of the bag is very nice, as only a few puffs of gas at 100+ feet will fill it completely by the time it surfaces. Also, the closed bottom prevents accidental-deflation in rough seas. Oh, and for relatively important pieces of gear, don't forget the old philosophy of 'two is one and one is none!' (taken within limits, of course!) Hope I've helped! Questions? Comments? Flames (hope not)? Send 'em my way! :-) -Case Harris diveman@kw*.co* Scubagator@ao*.co* wrote: > I have been using a 50lb Sub Salve lift bag, assuming it was best suited for > what I do...deco hangs on dives w/ no decent line...on South Fla wrecks. > > I'm curious to see what folks on the list use, and if there is a better bag. > > Thanks, > > Sean -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
