If one of us had someone we really did not like, that we really hated, and we managed to convince them to get scuba instruction from Derrick----- and if their "accidental death" ensued under Derrick's "watchful care"....., would we have just been involved in a conspiracy to commit murder??? If any instructor out there has sent a student to Derrick---how much complicity should they feel??? And if a dive boat takes Derrick out, with the knowledge of Derrick's entire want of care, and his conscious indifference to the consequences of his actions..... would the dive boat become a party and participant to further acts of culpable negligent manslaughter by Derrick, should he happen to engage in this behavior the next time he takes students out on their boat---or the next time he has been in any way responsible for their gear or dive knowledge??? These are not trivial questions. IANTD wheels of justice are moving, but old age may well out pace them. Derrick may well be on his third and fourth versions of the "truth" as he remembers it. Several versions later, he may appear to have "risked his life in a frantic search along the bottom for Jane, even though he only had 1500 psi in his back gas"....., but he has many "versions" left, before he can deviate that far from the truth. As of now, we may still wonder what threat he may represent, to an unknowing dive public. And as Derrick steadies himself and his IANTD directorate of supporters, in his own mind, he has become the self righteous, and the oppressed, and would rally others to let the system decide, to let a proper BOA of IANTD, handle this with the "extreme prejudice" they are "known" for. As Derrick lives the good life, safe within the dry confines of his dive shop in Fort Lauderdale, he lives at the expense of the dead. There is no denial that he watched her sink to her death. No other facts can be brought out that can mitigate this "lack of action". There is no denial he had her diving with stage bottles with no visible markings. And there is no denial that she was breathing the wrong mix as a result of Derrick's training and gear configuration, and without the benefit of an instructor to watch over her and catch this mistake---all she had was Derrick. . Any thing else which comes from further study, will not contradict the primary facts, as just stated. Dan Volker -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
