Same here. Since I always dive wet, I don't have redundant bouyancy
control, but can dump the weight belt if necessary.

Been doing all single tank dives this way for years. You can always find
these old plastic backplates at used sporting goods chain stores, like Play
It Again Sports, or in dusty back corners of dive shops -- and pick one up
for around a dollar and fifty cents, since nobody else wants them. Real
easy to cut the slots, for the cam strap, in the fabric 'twixt the wings
and then seal the cut edges of the nylon with heat and/or sewing.

You can pack one of these very light weight, durable plastic plates on top
of your other gear in your gear bag, just in case you need it, and it
becomes a protective layer over the other stuff in there while travelling.

I use mine in a "power snorkel" config: either with a single tank/y-valve
for a quick poke to check viz and/or place a deco bottle, or to check the
possibilities of a new sink; or with a single 1st stage/octo (short and
long hoses) for shallow salt water dives.

Simply pop any size tank on, since the molded shape is designed for a
single. The shoulder strap webbing comes from a single point at the apex of
the triangle, rather than from two separate points like a metal plate, but
otherwise there's little difference in the way it fits/works. Then just rig
yourself hog as usual.

Life is short -- this is not a rehearsal.
