Several years ago at a dive show, I noticed a simple gadget that allowed a diver to talk underwater. There were no electronics involved. The device was simply a plastic tube, about 6" long & 2" in dia., with a small bellows housed inside. You were supposed to take a breath from your regulator and then remove the reg and put the tube up to your lips and talk for as long as possible on a single breath. The concept was that sound will travel well in water if you can get the sound waves to initiate. The bellows provided a vibrating surface that was not disturbed by exhaled bubbles. After talking for one breathful, you then pushed the bellows (which have now inflated out of the tube) back into the tube & could have another go. It was claimed that you could hear quite clearly over several metres. I didn't buy the gadget at the time because I thought - does it work ? - looks expensive for what it is ! - it's just one more bit to clip on to the diver to add to the 'christmas tree' effect However, on reflection it has now occured to me that whilst I would never take something like this diving, it might be very useful for pool training & could save trips back up to the surface just to say a few words. 1.Does anyone know what I am talking about ? 2.Has anyone used this gadget ? 3.If so, does it work well ? 4.If 'yes' to 1, 2 & 3...any idea of who makes this gadget & where to get one ? Please email any reply directly to me as I am no longer subscribing to this List (too much traffic !).
