If there is the possibility of having to tow a stricken dive partner back for a long distance you will probably have to stay in the water with him and tow the kayak but the kayak will at least serve as a resting platform for you and a place to get rid of heavy or cumbersome gear for the long haul. If he is up to it you could tow him in his BCD with the kayak . >> Hey folks, The boat I dive off of regularly and set the hook for uses a small one man kayak as a "chase boat". A float line with float and flag is trailed off the dive boat but if a diver surfaces and is swept away or cannot swim to the tag line the kayak is sent with a saftey line attached for the diver. When the kayak gets to the diver the line is attached to the diver by means of snap link and then he is hauled in by the boat while the kayak observes/assists as needed. There is a tag line on the kayak that the diver can hold on to, or clip stuff to. If necessary the paddler can clip the kayak to the safety line as well and assist the diver while being pulled to the boat. I know most of you would suggest that a diver who cant reach the boat get some track shoes, but we often deal with students and strong current/wind, both of which can make for an interesting day.
