Regarding the thread on dive computer problems....

On a recent diving trip from the UK to the west coast of Vancouver Island, we
had a
potentially serious problem with my buddy's Monitor II computer. The depth
reading was 4.5m
less than mine, using a similar Monitor II. His was an earlier model, before
the introduction
of a luminous background for the text display. I suspected we had a
'disagreement' when he
was happily going down below 45m, and my computer was giving out '2 mins to
no-stop'. We had
agreed beforehand that this was to be a warm-up, no-deco dive. When we
compared depths on the
bottom, we were suprised at the difference.

On the way up, I was following the 'no-stop curve' and at 16m still had 2mins
to no-stop
displayed. My buddy's Monitor II was now displaying 45 mins to no-stop.
Hmmm...

At 3.5m depth, my buddy's computer cleared and went into 'surface mode'. This
convinced
us it was his Monitor II not mine which was faulty.

We routinely do 3 mins extra safety stops at 3 or 5m for ALL dives in addition
to any
indicated stops on the computer. As we don't know when the Monitor II went
wrong, a review
of previous dive profiles with 3.5-4.5m added to all depths made for
interesting reading. Some
of the 'safety stops' were in fact necessary stops. Some were not long enough.
Hmmm...

As I am a recent subscriber to Techdiver, is this a well known problem that
has been
discussed "ad nausium" before ? Have other Monitor II users experienced
similar problems ?
Needless to say, the computer has been returned for attention. This particular
fault is
probably one of the worst modes of failure (short of a total switch-off during
decompression)
as it is not obviously going wrong. Maybe you all wear a back-up depth guage
and watch ..or
2 or 3 computers each (?) Any comments ??

	Regards, Steve M.
