I had some steel genesis tanks which had the paint coming off in large
patches.   I stripped the tanks as you did but then repainted them with
galvanized spray paint.
It works great.   Not only does the paint protect the tanks, but it looks good
with a flat medium gray finish.   If you happen to chip some off, just get out
the old spray can and go to town.
