This is off the top of my head, I could be way off base, your mileage may vary, insert other disclaimers as appropriate. I remember the tale as follows. There was an incident not too long ago with a (North?) Korean submarine that ran aground in a politically sensitive area (i.e., the sub had no "legitimate" business where it was). The crew abandoned ship, the locals found the boat and searched it, and found some Fienos. It was not clear whether they were intended as escape equipment or to insert special operations swimmers, but the incident was apparently VERY embarrassing to the Fieno manufacturer, and the unit was taken off the market. Sales may well have been bad. The unit had some serious deficiencies, mainly in the scrubber duration department. On the other hand, given what you have told us about Japanese diving, those deficiencies make a lot more sense. It was designed to fit into that market. >Actually, I have been considering getting a rebreather. The AP Valves >Inspiration rebreather is in an acceptable price range. My major concerns >are that I wouldn't know where to get scrubber material and where to get >O2. But, it is a viable option. Talk with the Anaesthesiology department at the local hospital that does major surgery. The gaseous anaesthesia rig is a rebreather, probably manufactured by Draeger. You DON'T want to use an open-circuit rig, because you DON'T want to gas the doctors, and (at least forty years ago) some of the gases used were HIGHLY flammable, even explosive. (This last is from one of my mother's textbooks - she was a surgical nurse before she met my father.) I got a good look at the rig last Spring, when I had to have a pin put into a broken finger. I saw this transparent plastic cannister filled with pellets, saw the hoses hanging off, going to the mask, and realized what I was looking at. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
