In response to my note, Gordon describes using his reel to hang beneath a free-floating liftbag as an alternative to tying the bottom of the ascent line to the wreck. This is in fact what I did after my first attempt to shoot the bag failed. It is actually a pretty comfortable way to decompress, but as Gordon points out may get you into trouble if there is a current. My only concern here is that currents sometimes pick up during a dive, usually due to tidal fluctuation, and it seems like an emergency procedure should take this possibility into account. By the way, what is an SMB? Pete asks why one doesn't just run a reel from the anchor line. In my case, the wreck seemed so easy to get oriented on that running a line off the anchor seemed unecessary. The trouble was that I was so busy looking for junk on the bottom that I must have gone past the anchor line without even noticing, and then kept on swimming. On a wreck that big (500+ ft) I didn't have time to swim back and forth looking. The lesson here is either to run a reel or be more careful! Pete's suggestion to use a self-venting bag is a good one.
