>I'm not sure what you're saying here Steve. I agree the PSI post was very >self serving, but I don't understand your seeming lack of concern regarding >substandard visual inspection techniques. The main problem with the PSI >post was that it obscured the fact that divers need to be VERY careful with >DOT-AL cylinders made of alloy 6351-T6. I agree fully, and think you may have misunderstood me. I am very concerned. That's why I think PSI might be serving the community better by reminding everyone of the importance of the light/mirror exam, rather than simply repeating for the zillionth time how if everyone in the world paid them $200 and took their course there would be no more tank explosions. The problem. obviously, is not that there are no enough PSI inspectors, but that PSI - and other - inspectors are not doing the job right! My own feeling is that PSI has made the visual into such a big deal that very few who take the course bother to do the whole thing, and that many of them omit the really important bits - like the crack check - with the less important ones. One would be better off with a simple inspection done well than an elaborate one done badly or skipped because it's too much trouble. I can show anyone how to inspect for cracks in 5 or so minutes, and the gear to do it costs about $5. So there's no excuse for anyone, trained inspectors especially, omitting this critical step. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
