Drew,

This may be true when the water is relatively warm (>65 deg), but
when the water is cold, (<54 deg) the 80's don't provide enough negative 
buoyancy to offset the additional required thermal protection. 
They are also not steel, so they will  get banged up a bit
more on wreck dives. And yes, the 72's need a little more 
maintenence than aluminum tanks.

I picked up my 72's for less than 100 each :-))

Because aluminum 80's cost about half to one third as much to buy new and
are a bit less of a maintenance hassle for saltwater use. Not to mention the
buoyancy characteristics of 80's over 72's make them the more desirable tank
for use in a doubles rig in open water.
