>The question I have is what scenario would you need a pony? Run out of >air? What happened to your discipline there? That is not my concern. Gear failure? How often does >this happen, enough to drag a pony everywhere you go? I don't think so. That is exactly the main reason that I am considering it. If this were a non issue, I would not worry about it. However, IMHO, at 100fsw, solo, it is an issue. If I am wrong I'd like to know, as I do not relish the thought of spending money and shlepping around more gear. > >And I have not heard of anyone killed by missing a "safety stop". No, it is merely an added bonus, that if you have a pony for the reason above, you can still do a safety stop. My computer doesn't make me do this, but I dive in cold water with a wetsuit, and if I don't exert myself I get cold. So I like to err on the side of safety. Unless >this "safety stop" thing really means "I'm in deco." Discipline? I've only gotten into deco once in my life, and that was early in my diving career. it was 6 minutes of deco, and took care of itself since the last half of my dive was in shallower water. I have not repeated that mistake since, nor do I plan to. Buddy >running out of air or "stuck in a crevasse"? Use rule #1, don't dive with >strokes. I do use rule #1, which is why I often dive solo. However, I consider it an added bonus if I can be of help should I encounter someone in distress. > > pony = placebo I still don't agree with you. Maybe we just have a difference of opinion here...I think mainly you think that it is *very* unlikely that my air supply will suddenly fail, and I think that this is not a risk I want to take. > >Now why would you *not* use one? One more piece of unnecessary gear >cluttering you up, getting in your way, snagging on stuff, giving >unneeded task loading, ruining or degrading your dive experience. Absolutely, this is why we are having this discussion. I would rather *not* use one for the obvious reason, but have pretty much convinced myself that I need to because of the possibility of my air supply failing at 100+fsw when diving solo.
