OK guys, I seem to be having a "Blond Moment" on this issue. I am not a chemist, or a physiologist. So I am having a difficult time understanding the relationship of mol weight to solubility. That is if there is any relationship. And the relationship to narcosis. When I look at the quantity of a gas in blood at 1ATA, vs. % of gas in air, vs. Mol.Wt, I get confused on the issue of argon in the blood. PPAg would be .00934 ATA at 1ATM, why then so much Ag in the blood? And look at Ne, there is .00002% Ne in the blood with 9.178 ml/l. First off Buhlmann's book does not say whether the quantities or artial blood or vascular blood. I believe from the O2 number that the blood is artial. Some base knowledge: 1. O2 is metabolized and CO2 is generated as a product of matabilization. Therefore; the quantity in blood will change with respect to time, work effort, and what part of the circularity system is being measured. 2. The other gases, He, Ne, N2, H2, Ag remain relatively constant in air at 1ATA. 3. Other tissues are not in this discussion. I am trying to simplify the puzzle. GAS QTY ML/L BLOOD %AIR MOL.WT. Narcotic/Toxic O2 23.252 0.29948 31.999 Toxic and Narcotic? CO2 483.565 0.00031 44.010 Toxic He 8.686 0.000005 4.0026 HPNS Ne 9.178 0.00002 20.183 ? N2 12.183 0.78084 28.013 Narcotic H2 14.705 0.0000005 2.0159 ? Ag 25.660 0.00934 39.948 Narcotic Questions: 1. Is there any relationship between Mol.Wt. and solubility? If there is I can not see it here. 1.a. Is there a standard measure of solubility? 2. Is the high solubility of argon perhaps the reason it is so narcotic? With these numbers, I can not determine if the PPAg is increased, how much will Ag will be absorbed to achieve equilibrium. 2.a. Does argon bind to anything in the blood, or does it just take up space? How about the other "inert" gases? 3. There is a relationship between Mol.Wt. and narcotic. By looking at these numbers the assumption is Ne and H2 are Narcotic. I have not been able to find references to Narcotic effects of these gases. 4. Can someone direct me to a reference, i.e. Anastasia medicine that may dive into the effects of these gases on the body? Robert P.
