I just wanted to add some details and maybe a clarification regarding the ppO2 found at inhabited Andean altitudes. Non-aclimatized (that's us) people start to exhibit hypoxic symptoms as low as 7,000 ft. (ppO2= .16) and exhibit dramatic imparement by about 15,000 ft. (ppO2= .12) although individuals vary quite a bit. On the other hand, some Andean natives live above 15,000 ft and will work as high as 20,000-22,000 ft.(ppO2= .96-.98). This info comes from "Going Higher" by Charles Houston MD and USAF manual "Physiological Training" The key here is aclimatized Vs non-aclimatized. High altitude illness symptoms run the gamut from headaches to waking up dead. The Andean natives *may* have genetic differences allowing greater tolerance for hypoxic conditions. ============================================================================== Chris Elmore University of South Carolina chris@ot*.hs*.sc*.ed* Humanities and Social Sciences Laboratory (803)-777-7840 Columbia, S.C. 29208
