Chris, you are actualy wrong about this for the following paradoxical
reason: the doing it right diver spends less money on the basic
necessities, and gets better stuff, so has the money to buy the toys,
like scooters, and his diving is improved by strting out right so that
he needs more stages, regs, backup gear, etc. 

The stroke gets so badly hosed up front by dive shops who pormoite
stroke gear and load them up on useless crap for giant money and then
thay can't dive anyway, have to spend money again to replace this stuff,
and then have no money for anything else that they would have bought had
they not been screwed in the first place.
