This has been interesting, and points up several interesting points. We do a lot of tethered diving with several different types of tethers depending on what the reason is for the dive. Some times one on a line, sometimes two with a spliced Y shaped line, we use a slider where one diver can move up and down the line independent of the other diver. The concept of using a tether is not the only answere. The concept of using a reel attached to an ice screw is interesting and straight out of the "cave comunity". Yet are there any cave divers that would tie off to a tree root on the bank???????? ?? The answere and reason is obvious. The same applies to ice diving. How about tieing off just inside the hole??? Aghhhhh if you have ever tried to put in an ice screw underwater you know how rediculous this is. Furthermore if you have ever used an ice screw to keep the block from moving back into the hole you know how they loosen up and can fall out by themselves. Nice idea but probally not recomended. Line signals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you read this list you should see the major problem every one has a beter way and a different set of signals. Use the kiss principle and make sure each diver and each tender are on the same chanel with the same signals. Any more than three signals and you probally should be using Com gear and a surface communication unit. Ice diving is not cave diving !!!!! it can be taylored to just about any level of diver, from the wetsuit diver to the tech deco diving maineacic. Adjustments must be made for the task at hand, and prehaps the most important part of the whole process is the surface supply with hot water hot soup and a warm place to change. DONOT underestimate the importance of the surface team. Ice diving is best handeled as a social event, where the question is not what is the least no. of divers it takes to do an ice dive, but how many divers can we get through the hole in a day. -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
