David, thanks for this excellent post. This is exactly what we have found at all depths, and with even simple tasks - they think they did great, and they did nothing of the kind, just like they think that funcitoning impaired is a good thing , or that there is some ability, or that his is some measure of ability. Human reaction to mind-altering drugs is unquantifiable, and therefor extremely dangerous in all situations. Take a look a what the deep air mavens are saying, like our "american pig" rocket scientist who on the one hand claims "narcosis can be managed", and on the other says the effects can be different every day. This is what Dr. Timothy Leary said about LSD. I used air because I had nothing else at first. I then got onto helium and worked with that, but I was SEVERELY held back by my previous air experience. I did not realize or recognize the problem with the depths at which I could feel no buzz, until mounting evidence of clustery by me and everyone I know started to add up . The fact that I had used air before so much made me used to accepting the disability, without acknowledging it. My first PADI Deep Diver course was enough to show me impairment, and my first warm water dives in the Carribean were enough to show me the buzz. It took years for me to overcome the stupitiy that was passed on to me by the complete and utter dog-stupid morons who teach diving, and the strokes I know who think they are "good on air".
