Your most used signal will probably be checking if the divers are OK and
the divers answering back that they are OK. If you have it as 3 pulls, there
is a
waste of two pulls. Also there is the chance of missing a pull sending the
wrong
signal.
The use of 2 pulls for taking up slack is unnecessary. The line tenders
should be keeping the lines with almost no slack. Also, with too much slack
, the signals don't pass along the line.
What we use is:
1 pull = OK
2 pulls = give more line. (2 pulls from tender = there is no more line)
3 pulls = pull me in. (3 pulls from tender = I'm pulling you in)
4 pulls = pull me in NOW.
