Carl, The problem is that even trivial hyperbaric exposures can produce DCS in divers with PFO, under the right circumstances. Thus, there is NO GUARANTEED safe tables for divers with PFO's, and even extremely conservative tables (really tables that have such short no-d times and such long decom schedules that no one would dive them) can and will produce DCS in divers with PFO under the right circumstances (ie, coughing, sneezing, etc. with venous bubbles present). So, either we screen all divers for PFO's, and tell those with documented PFO's that this is an absolute contra-indication to diving, or we produce tables that are safe in the general population, and continue the way we have been going.
