Tom,

The theory is that increasing loads of free gas (ie, bubbles) activates
the extrinsic pathway for blood coagulation.  This produces fibrin and
then the fibrin is degraded, resulting in FDP's. 

Thus, measuring FDP's is a indirect way of looking at decompression
stress.  Carmellon has limits that they have set for acceptable and
unacceptable levels of FDP's after a dive, but it has been a couple
of years since took the rebreather class with them, so I will have 
to lay my hands on the notes from the class.

One problem is that this requires a blood sample before the dive (to
establish a baseline) and another after the dive (I think they were
sampling 4-8 hours after surfacing).   Another problem is that the
test is not cheap.
