No, the posts by John Dunk and others about doxycycline are right on.
Lariam is the one with nasty side effects.

I can speak from experience. My physician put me on Lariam prior to a trip
to Belize a year ago without saying a word about side effects. I
experienced symptoms similar to a constant, low-grade hangover: stomach
discomfort, slight dizziness, insomnia, and difficulty concentrating. The
insidious part about Lariam is that since you only take one pill a week, you
may not connect it with any side effects experienced days later. After
happening across some posts regarding Lariam on rec.scuba, I realized what
was causing my symptoms and called my physician. He switched me to
doxycylcine, the nasty side effects wore off after a week, and I was able to
dive (and eat and sleep) without further problems.

The only limitation with Doxycycline is that different strains of malaria
are resistant to certain treatments. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control
(CDC) web page at http://www.cdc.gov/travel/travel.html is a good source of
information regarding which medication is recommended for which parts of the
world. I'd avoid Lariam if at all possible, however. (As Ben alludes to,
Lariam has caused severe and long-lasting psychological disorders in a few
individuals.)
