I'd like to know if this was a Luxfor, or overpressured, or had more than one burst disk. from the Calgary Sun, Aug 23, 1994 Rare Tank Blast Surprises Expert Scuba tanks are highly explosive, but accidnets are rare, a veteran Calgary diver said yesterday. Gord Cousins said all divers are taught how to carefully handle tanks, which are filled with pressuriezed air. But he said the sport is not dangerouse and families should be encouraged to take part. He said accidnets like the one that instnatly killed Calgary diver Bob La Rue and slightly injured another diver Saturday are extrmemely rare. "In the nine years that I have been diving I've never heard of it happening," he said of the deadly explosion. La Rue, 50, owner of Scuba-Metric Dive Shop on 1a St. S.W., was filling up an air tank at Emerald Bay on Waterton Lake when a tank blew up. Fellow diver Darryl Cyr, 35, suffered a badly bruised leg when he was thrown by the blast. La Rue's father, Ozzie, also couldn't believe hsi son, whom he called "a professional diver" could fall victim to such a freak accident. "It's ridiculous, no one's ever heard of a tank blowing up," a distraught Ozzie said. Police say it's likely the blast was caused by a "burst valve" on the tank failing to release excessive pressure that may have built up while the tank was being filled. But Cousins said the most likely cause of a tnak explosion is dropping it or banging it against something.
