Various writers to Techdiver have commented on the advantages of fullface
masks with rebreathers and in various circumstances. Re the problem when you
have to go to baleout or snorkel: I use an aqualung with a mouthpiece as most
divers do. I also have a Spirotechnique fullface mask (the sort that looks a
bit like a gasmask), and on the few dives that I made with it, I carried a
spare halfmask as well as a snorkel. This implies that I can easily get the
fullface mask off underwater, e.g. I am not wearing a safety helmet over the
fullface mask's straps.
Such among fullface-mask-using professional divers that I have asked on this
point, merely said "you should learn not to run out of air" or the like, when
I had a short professional diving course run by an ex-RN-naval diver; he
taught divers <not> to carry a snorkel, he had a contempt of sport divers, he
called them "scooby-doos" and looked on a snorkel carried by an aqualung diver
as a characteristic and to him unwelcome feature of sport-diver-ism.
