>Mr. Garth, Bowen,

>I just wanted to convey my frustrations to you reguarding your publication
DeepTech and especially it's most recent issue. I cancelled my subscription
yesterday and actually wish I had done so before I recieved this last one.
>
>I used to have respect for your magazines, Mr. Gilliam and Mr. Irvine. Due
to recent events I have completely lost that respect for Mr. Gilliam and
anyone associated with his latest actions. As a person who follows the
discussions on the mail lists I have read almost every one of the posts
mentioned within the article "Fear & Loathing on the Internet" and I have to
say that this article was completely out of context. The messages were
edited & altered so as to create a larger than life issue so Mr. Gilliam
could punish Mr. Irvine for speaking out aginst a dangerous practice that
TDI makes so much money off of. Mr. Irvine can go a little over the top at
times (as Gilliam has also been known to do) but his messages are intended
to promote safety and knowledge.
>
>I also find it interesting that when Mr. Irvine was speaking out aginst one
of Gilliam's rivals you were quick to promote his antics, why the blatent
flip-flop?? We all know why - he threatens TDI's profits.
>
>My opinion is not alone. I have spoken with several others who know little
of the internet or the WKPP yet they were appaled by this dribble and also
plan on cancelling their subscriptions. How many have you lost this week
anyway? I do not personally know either of these gentlemen other than a few
conversations I have had with on the telephone at various times with each of
them reguarding other issues unrelated to this. Until recently I was
completely neutral, but now I have to stand up for what is right.
>
>If you ever choose to loose the bad influences and start to publish real
articles that we could actually learn something from I may consider buying
your products again.
>
>I have also attached below a recent message I posted to several mailing
lists further outlining detailed frustrations I have had with DeepTech (I
suggest you read it, my opinion is very similar to many other readers.)

>>I actually discontinued my subscription as have many other people who
actually know the full story. Now lets see if we actually get our money back
(I know - don't count on it!). My problems included one issue never being
sent and we all know when the last issue was actually delivered. On top of
the unprofessional administration the articles for the most part belong in
some gossop rag and not in a technical diving magazine. Being as the owners
of this magazine have alot to gain from selling classes you will never see
truly technical information within it's publically accessable pages, just
continued product advertising under false pretenses.
>>
>>Just look at the content so far this year:
>>
>>-Each issue has several articles pushing their rebreather that in any
other mag would be under the heading of "paid advertising" with no articles
about any other system even though four other manufacturers actually started
shipping this year - including real news about how some of these systems
have actually been used for some truly technical exploration.
>>
>>-An article about cave diving that details and promotes genuinely
dangerous techniques (thet even put a small disclaimer at the end to cover
their butts legally). (I especially liked the photos of cave divers in OW
gear including snorkles)
>>
>>-Various other articles that once again could only be described as blatent
advertising for their agency.
>>
>>-Dare I even mention the dribble in the latest issue. That insulted the
intelligence of anybody who knows the real story (and even many who don't).
>>I have talked to several people lately who know almost nothing of the WKPP
or its outspoken leader who were offended that thay were being charged for
this garbage. I personally don't feel like paying $7.50 for basically one
man's tribute to a lost friend and a bunch of biased personal attacks
against a very successful dive group in Florida because they spoke out
against a dangerous practice that the publisher of this rag is making alot
of money from, thats really all there was in that issue. (George can go a
little over the top sometimes but his messages are right on the money - alot
of people have learned quality info from him that improves safety and
reduces diving expenses)
