i have both a 30 and a 20 rigged this way, and i agree, it works very well.
 i use 4" long bolt snaps.  they have about a 1" diameter ring, and i stick
my pointer finger through this which helps control the clip, then operate
the snap w/ my thumb.  bigger one's would probably be easier, but then they
get in the way of the first stage.

fyi:  i am diving in water in the mid 30s F, so yes, it works in cold water
w/ thick gloves.  i personally would give caribiners a wide berth.  those
things scare me underwater.  good luck.

ps.  i find that old LP hose works very well in place of the 'fuel hose'
handle, and at least for me it was free (i had some old, shot BC whips
lying around).
