Granted, the agencies want you to jump through about twice as many hoops as should ideally be needful for a reasonably competent and experienced diver, but I don't think the problem is best solved by bypassing training altogether. A good instructor gives you value for your money, opens your eyes to something you didn't know before, even if you thought you knew it all, and takes you on some dives you would have wanted to do anyway. (Finding a good instructor is, of course, the tricky bit.) You can be much more certain there aren't any nasty gaps in your knowledge after a course; looking at it that way, it's cheap insurance.
