The increased popularity of latex has led to producers making the stuff "quick and dirty", i.e. not fully polymerized (ploymers being generally inert). The finished product thus contains significant traces of raw material, which are not nearly as inert. The raw materials are also naturally-occuring, so allergic reactions are more likely than they would be to totally synthetic materials.
