In my opinion, the purpose of the deep stops is to prevent the bubbles to
grow beyond the threshold where you loose the significant effects of
surface tension increasing the internal pressure of the gas inside the
bubble. As far as my understanding of bubble physics goes, it would take
FAR greater pressures than what we expose ourselves to, to spotaneously
form bubbles in solution. Hence, the theories involving "microbubbles",
bubble "micronuclei", or bubble "seeds". From what I understand, the
bubbles are already there, and the art of decompression is to prevent
their growth to sizes large enough to cause observable problems.
Also, the deep stops allow time for your circulatory system to run at least
one complete cycle through your body (i.e., allows your blood to "catch up"
to your current depth).
